Still no answers. Took the big drive to my uncle’s shop. They spent almost the whole day with it and can’t find anything wrong. Runs and drives fine but makes weird and different noises depending on what’s going on (how long driving, speed, etc).

NOT:

brakes (despite very much sounding like the brakes)

CV axels

Wheel bearings

If the noises are varying according to distance driven, it could be something thermal or friction related. Have you tried a different set of tires?

Is it noise only or can you feel it in the wheel/pedals?

Most mysterious.

C an you hear it if you rev the engine in neutral? Have you tried it both cold & warm?

That’s bad. That’s real bad.

Symptoms and noises like that which vary on temperature after having ruled out all other noise complaint sources mean it’s likely not body related either.

Which means: expensive as fuck.

Runs and drives fine, sounds like brakes, shows up based on temperatures and distances? It’s all very, very big stuff. Generally transmission internals or structural failure.

I’m leaning transmission at this point. At just shy of 175k miles on the original clutch, I’m thinking that’s related

I have not but I doubt it’s them. The sounds can sound very metallic

Only while moving. Coasting: no noise. Slowing down or speeding up: noise

Nope

I should add: no slippage of the clutch even after the noises start and no issues going into or out of gear. No popping out of gear.

Hmm, so it needs to be under load. Based on that and the temperature dependency, it sounds engine related. I’d guess something to do with the engine and air, especially since when slowing down, the vacuum system to the brake booster is the only thing that’s doing much work.

It can be a pulley bearing.

Related to car speed, not engine speed though
